24 Hours in Sydney

3:07am Oxford St, Sydney

Back on March 19, I participated in the 24HourProject which is about photographing in your city taking and posting one photo every hour.  I thought I should take some time to write and take about my 24 hours.

When you think about it the project is quite simple as all you have to do is stay awake, keep your batteries charged and take a photo of something every hour. No one said the photos need to be good!  It is only a photographer’s pride and desire to do well and the fear of being judged poorly by your peers that makes it more of a challenge. For me as generally I only take a good photo about once a month, how many decent ones could I get in 24 hours?

The plan I came up with on the train ride in.

So how do you go about showing the hum of Sydney? Well, what are the first things that come to mind? For me, it is Parties, Beaches, Manly Ferry, Harbour Bride and Opera House, and Sports.

Okay, so where do I start? Well, this was easy as I had seen a post mentioned if you wanted to meet up with some other people participating to meet up at Kings Cross. From there I just thought I would go with the flow.

Some thoughts on how I might approach things next year in no particular order.

  • Start thinking about it more than the afternoon beforehand. (esp 3-6 am)

  • Work out how to travel from spot to spot and fit it into the hour framework.

  • Get some sleep the day before instead of being on the go from 10 am Friday to 3 am Sunday.

  • Line up some Portraits beforehand to shine a light on some issues that Sydney faces.

  • Have a shooting partner, I am not a fan of big groups but you need someone to bounce off to keep going when you get tired.

  • Accept that I won't have a good shot every hour. It is about the whole body of work not the single.

So without further ado here is a video I recorded showing you all the shots that I took and a couple of highlights from each hour.
